Adopt a German Shepherd Dog

German Shepherd Dog Dog

Cassius the Dog needs a home

Required:

1) Cassius is a special-needs medical case that will require special care and diet for the remainder of his life. This includes a recommended diet of Blue Mountain Senior wet and dry food, supplemented with Omega's (Salmon Oil) and Vitamin E.

2) Cassius is currently prescribed, and will need to continue taking, Tramadol and Rimadyl, to help manage chronic pain due to dysplasia and arthritis.

3) Cassius will not be placed in a home with other dogs, cats or small animals.

Cassius' ideal home will be a quiet, low-key setting, with minimal stairs/steps, and an owner that can provide him with all of the attention that he needs.

CASSIUS was surrendered in-the-field to Animal Control, so that his owner could escape from being charged with Animal Cruelty.

Cassius came to MOGS near-death, suffering from multiple injuries and illnesses, which included: Severe pneumonia; Heartworm+ with visualized microfilia; fly strike so severe that the tips of his ears were missing, and what was left was infected on both sides; a massive flea infestation that killed off all the fur from his shoulders to his tail; multiple, oozing yeast blisters on his damaged skin; bilateral hip dysplasia; spinal spondylosis; severely underweight, multiple missing/cracked/broken teeth (from chewing a heavy chain) and an arthritic back knee. He also picked up an infected neuter incision.

After 6 weeks of intensive medical care, Cassius has regained his health, fought off all of the infections, is gaining weight, re-growing his fur, and is rapidly recovering from a lifetime of severe abuse and neglect.

TEMPERAMENT

Cassius is a super-sweet, very large velcro dog, that bonds very quickly with his caretakers and wants to be wherever they are. His very favorite activity is relaxing in his crate, on a soft, cushioned bed with warm blankets, and working on a tasty bone or a kong filled with frozen yumminess. He enjoys being outside for short-periods, especially if it's warm, but truly prefers his new life as an inside, seriously pampered pup. Cassius has never had experience on a leash before coming to MOGS, so tends to pull, especially when he is in the mood to explore. He is super smart, and learned recall to his name quickly, as well as his kennel command. Due to dysplasia in his back hips, he does not work on the command to "sit." He enjoys treats, and is working on taking them softly from his foster's hand. He is completely housebroken, and will notify people when he needs to go outside.

Cassius does struggle with separation anxiety, and very much prefers to be around people. He he is working on this issue with his current foster, but will need to continue to work on remaining calm in a crate with his new owner, when they leave home.

OTHER ANIMALS

Cassius has spent his life isolated on a short-chain in the backyard, so does not handle being around other dogs. He has a very strong small-prey drive, and cannot be adopted into a home with cats, small dogs or other small animals.

CHILDREN

Cassius is very-sweet, but very large, and due to coordination problems, is not very aware of his position in space. Because of this, he should only be adopted into a home with children 12+, who are familiar with how to behave around a large dog.

MEDICAL

All of Cassius' acute medical needs have been resolved. He is currently undergoing treatment for his Heartworm status, and this will be completed prior to his adoption.

Cassius has chronic health issues that will continue to need monitoring and intervention for the remainder of his life. These include hip, knee and spinal dysplasia and arthritis, as well as broken/damaged teeth. Because of skin allergies and a compromised immune system, he requires a special diet, and this will also need to be continued in an adoptive home.

Overall, Cassius is a gentle giant, who will love you unconditionally. Will you be the one to give this sweet senior his deserving forever home?

If you're looking for a gorgeous, wonderful German Shepherd
who will love you forever,

CASSIUS'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

PLEASE READ THIS:

  1. We're picky about our adopters!  GSDs are not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort and training.  They shed all year round.  They're big and scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and are usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time applying.

  2. All MOGS dogs must be inside family pets. We do not adopt to outdoor only homes.

  3. When you're not home, you must put your dog indoors (NOT in the yard).  One adopted MoGS dog died after the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, someone opened the gate, and she was hit by a car.  Privacy fences get broken into, gates are opened, thieves steal dogs. NEVER leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!

  4. You're required to make a lifetime commitment.  The minute you adopt, it is your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.  Only you can do that.

  5. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.

  6. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?  If you move?  If you have a child?

  7. You're making a lifetime commitment to a MOGS Dog.   We expect you to keep it!  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
